Dahlia imperialis
Dahlia imperialis
The imperial tree dahlia. The main reason to grow this species dahlia in the Northern US is mostly for its foliage and stature in the garden, as it rarely has a warm or long enough season to bloom. BUT a lucky and patient gardener in Zone 8 may get blooms late in the season. The stalks are beautiful, thick and segmented. After frost, a saw is required to cut them down to the ground.
This dahlia is sold as an undivided, bare root, 1 year old seed grown specimen.
Type: species tree dahlia
Blossom size: 4″ - 5”
Plant height: 9’ - 15’
Bloom time: It’s tough to get this to bloom in zone 8 and below, but if it does bloom it is often in the end of the season just before frost.
Dahlias are tuberous rooted perennials native to Mexico and Central America, and can be grown as perennials in zones 8b and above if conditions allow. In zones 7 and below, dahlia tubers must be dug and stored for the winter. Dahlias perform best in a location with full sun and good drainage. Review our dahlia care guide for more tips on growing dahlias in your garden.
All dahlia tubers will be shipped via USPS in late April/early May unless otherwise requested.
Prices shown are for 1 tuber.
