Dahlia ‘Meadowburn Old Tweet’ is an antique peony-flowered dahlia in hues of deep yellow and bronze. The inner florets are gracefully curled, a classic characteristic of this once very popular dahlia type. In 1912, George Gordon wrote, “[the peony-flowered dahlias] make a strong appeal to those who especially appreciate flowers that suggest the hand of nature rather than of man in their making.” ‘Meadowburn Old Tweet’ certainly demonstrates the playfulness of nature’s creative design, with its sunny, dancing blooms reaching far into the sky on twisting stems.
This variety was named for Old Tweet, the Scottish gardener who taught Helena Rutherfurd Ely to garden as a child at her family’s home, Maple Grange, in Vernon, NJ.
This is a Meadowburn Heirloom Dahlia. The Meadowburn Collection consists of seven dahlia varieties that have been growing in the gardens at Meadowburn Farm since Helena Rutherfurd Ely’s era. For over 100 years, these same dahlias have been planted, dug, stored, and divided in the same way by the Meadowburn gardeners.
Dahlias are tuberous rooted perennials native to Mexico and Central America, and can be grown as perennials in zones 8b and above if conditions allow. In zones 7 and below, dahlia tubers must be dug and stored for the winter. Dahlias perform best in a location with full sun and good drainage. Review our dahlia care guide for more tips on growing dahlias in your garden.
All dahlia tubers will be shipped via USPS in late April/early May unless otherwise requested.
